History of the Bagpipe
The Bagpipe has a long and honorable history stretching back to the beginnings of instrumental music. Student's will learn about the origin and a brief history of the bagpipes.

The Practice Chanter
Students will learn proper care and maintenance of their practice chanter. The practice chanter is used throughout the piper's career for learning new songs and fingerings.

The Chanter Notes and Fingerings
Students will learn to perform practice scales and songs using all of the 9 notes on the bagpipe chanter with proper fingering.

Grace Notes

The bagpipe uses grace note embellishments to add interesting effect to many of the notes. Students will perform drills and develop these grace notes for future use in their repertoire.

Throws, Strikes,
Doublings
Another way to embellish notes on the bagpipe is to add multiple combinations of grace notes prior to, or in between melodic notes. Proper performance of these embellishments is what adds considerable complexity to the learning of the chanter.

Repertoire

Students will begin to build a song repertoire, while learning new embellishments with each new song. The repertoire learned during this phase will be memorized and used throughout each student's bagpipe journey.

Music Theory
Students will learn the stave, treble clef, note names, note timing values, time signatures, beats and rhythms.

Grips, Tachums, Birls, Taorluaths
These are additional types of embellishments that students will begin to add to their practice.
